SP10 Designated Charity Changed

Posted by Keokipele Ansar on March 7, 2010 at 8:29 PM
At the start of the Second Pride 2010 Committee term, the Chairpersons voted to continue Second Pride's association with Amnesty International, USA's OUTFront Program -- a specifically LGBT initiative for human rights and equality worldwide.

As the Committee set about the tasks of organizing the Festival and a roster of its own events leading up to the Festival, the Committee was informed of staffing and program cutbacks at AI, USA that brought about the demise of the OUTFront program. AI, USA would no longer have a program specifically dedicated to LGBT initiatives worldwide though they would continue to support LGBT causes through their grassroots networks.

Members of the Committee contacted AI, USA's in world representative millay Freschi to inquire whether or not funds raised by Second Pride on behalf of AI, USA could be guaranteed to go to LGBT initiatives despite the demise of the OUTFront Program. To date, millay Freschi has not received a definitive answer to the question and advises that in all likelihood, any funds donated by Second Pride to AI, USA would go into the "General Fund" to be used at Amnesty's discretion.

This unfortunate state of affairs has been ongoing for far too long without a decision from the Committee to designate an alternative charity as the recipient of the proceeds of it's fundraising efforts.

On behalf of the Second Pride 2010 Committee, I apologize for the delinquency in acting on what is clearly an important issue for our members, sponsors and donors. I regret that it has taken this long to act decisively in finding and naming an alternative charity.

Therefore, let it be known that from this day forward (Sunday, March 7, 2010), the Second Pride 2010 Committee will change all promotional materials both in world and on the website to indicate that the proceeds of this year's fundraising efforts will now be designated for the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission. The IGLHRC is an international LGBTI 501(c)(3) non-profit based in the US and is  "dedicated to human rights advocacy on behalf of people who experience discrimination or abuse on the basis of their actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity or expression."

To our valued members, sponsors and donors who have already contributed to Second Pride 2010 with the understanding that their donation would benefit Amnesty International, USA's OUTFront program, we will gladly refund any donation if so requested in writing via note card in world or email (kansar@secondpride.com). I will personally oversee the coordination of refunds along with Second Pride Treasurer Lemonodo Oh. You must request your refund by midnight SLT, Sunday, May 30, 2010 (the day following the opening of the 2010 Festival).

If you are in agreement with the designation of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission as Second Pride's 2010 charity, you do not need to do anything and you may rest assured that all proceeds from our fundraising efforts (less any refunds) will go directly to IGLHRC unless otherwise advertised in advance.

You must request your refund by midnight SLT, Sunday, May 30, 2010 (the day following the opening of the 2010 Festival). Otherwise, all proceeds will go to the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC).
